The German Packaging Award is the most prestigious packaging performance competition in Europe. The award is held under the patronage of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy and has been awarding the best solutions and innovations in a number of categories since 1963. The competition organizer is the German Packaging Institute (dvi) in Berlin.
Who should take part?
Companies, institutions and individuals from home and abroad are invited to take part. The submissions come from designers, developers, manufacturers and users of packaging solutions and machines as well as the creative young talent within the industry. Innovative solutions from the entire packaging value chain which are already on the market or available as a prototype can be submitted. The range extends from packaging machinery, technology and software to packaging materials, packaging means and packaging aids as well as displays, industrial, transportation, logistics and promotional packaging and packaging families.
How do I submit my entry?
Participants apply during the submission phase using an online form and send this together with additional product samples or mock-ups (except for machinery) before the deadline. Submissions may be made in German or English.
Submissions may be made in the following categories:
- Designing & processing
- Functionality & convenience
- Product presentation
- Cost effectiveness
- Logistics & material flow
- New material
- Packaging machines (engineering, technology, software)
- Young talent (school pupils, trainees, students)
How are the winners chosen?
The best packaging solutions of the year are selected by an independent jury, which reviews and evaluates all submissions and samples/models entered by the deadline at a two-day meeting using transparent criteria. Afterwards, the jury honours the best innovations of the year with the German Packaging Award. According to the number of award-worthy entries, more than one entry may is awarded in each of the current 10 competition categories. The jury makes a public statement in a short review text for each winner explaining the reasons for its decision.
Award and commendation
All winners will be announced by the dvi through press releases and the German Packaging Award website. In addition, the dvi commends all winners during a public ceremony at the FachPack in Nuremberg. The representatives of the winning innovations receive a trophy, certificate, seal and a winner's photo.
The jury has the opportunity to give special mention to a few packaging winners with a special Gold Award. This Gold Award celebrates achievements which in the jury's eyes stand out even from the best - for example those that set trends, provide particularly successful solutions to current pressing issues, offer completely new opportunities or offer an otherwise outstanding and exemplary packaging solution.
The winners of the Gold Awards are selected from among the packaging award winners and will be announced at the ceremony, where they will be awarded with a trophy, a certificate and gold seal before the assembled audience. The dvi presents the winners with their Gold Award during a stage-talk with representatives of the winning companies and special guests from the industry.
All winners and Gold Award winners will be announced and commended afterwards by the dvi through press releases and the German Packaging Award website.
